One of my favorite memories from my time at CAT is that I got to be the adoption counselor for a very special calico named Sue Bee. She had already been in the shelter almost a year (yikes!) when I started working at CAT in October 2011. She has diabetes and needs 2x daily medication to stay healthy. At the time, she was residing in what was then called “the garden room” at the top of the stairs in the adult cat adoption area. But she would always sneak out and run downstairs whenever you opened the door to that room! I think she just enjoyed the attention of getting scooped up and carried back. <3 Because of her medical needs, Sue Bee kept getting overlooked by adopters, even thought she is super friendly, cute, funny and loving. In today’s CAT, we would make different arrangements – maybe send her to foster care, do a ton of online promotion, etc – but back then, it wasn’t terribly uncommon for cats to stay at the shelter longer. Thankfully, a couple of volunteers ultimately decided she needed to join their family. Even though they were both adoption counselors themselves, I worked with them to sign the paperwork to make things official. Today, she is a beloved 16-year-old with two human sisters and has had such an amazing live. I’m so proud I got to be just a little part of her journey. And so grateful for how far CAT has come in the years since.
