About 20 years ago I was looking for a cat that I could use as a therapy animal at OHSU and Doernbecher. When I met Joey, a long haired silver tabby, I knew he might be a good fit as he was so self assured. The only problem was, he had ringworm. Protocols were different in those days which meant I had to drive to the shelter to give him full baths in a utility sink 2 or 3 times a week with whatever medicated soap was used at the time.
Fortunately he was very patient as I wasn’t wearing gloves or protective clothing!
He was an absolutely perfect therapy cat every week for 10 years.
I’ve been volunteering at the shelter for 24 years and things were quite different in the “old” days. We would often free roam a few cats at a time in the main room. One Sunday we had five cats out, but when we went to put everyone back, we could find only four. We looked EVERYWHERE to no avail. I went home and got a call later that the holdout had gone into a cupboard and crawled up the back into a drawer above where he hunkered down until someone opened it to get supplies. It was disconcerting to say the least!!
