Karen’s Story

One of my favorite things we’ve done at CAT during the ten years I’ve been here is when we moved to double-compartment housing and decreased our population capacity. It was a scary move for many–the fear was that with fewer housing units, we wouldn’t be able able to help as many cats. But the results were dramatic and overwhelmingly positive. Our cats did so much better! They got sick less, developed fewer behavior issues, and found homes more quickly. Our adoption numbers increased; our average length-of-stay decreased (it was 45 days in 2013 and is 9 days now); our average number of long-term (90+ days) residents plummeted (from 32 in 2013 to 2 now). We can give our cats better care, and that makes our staff and volunteers happier, in addition to our cats.
