It’s Hot: Are Your Pets Safe?

It’s a scorcher out there! August is typically the hottest month in the Portland metro area— with some days soaring in the triple-digits— according to our friends at Oregon Live. Here’s a list of important tips to keep your pets safe and healthy in this summer heat:

  • Provide plenty of fresh, cool water: In the heat and humidity of summer, even indoor pets are susceptible to dehydration. The best way to combat that is to offer clean water in a variety of locations in your home. By increasing the offering of wet food, you can also ensure that your pet stays more hydrated than by eating kibble alone.
  • Brush cats more frequently: This can help unburden your fuzzy friends of excess fur that can contribute to overheating.
  • Secure window screens: And keep your unscreened windows and door shut. We know cats and kittens love to snuggle in these windowsills for some fresh air and sunshine. Just make sure nobody goes tumbling out of them and can’t get back inside.
  • Catio cats?: Make sure your catio-loving residents have access to fresh water as well as the ability to take a break from the sun-bathing when they’re ready. Cats and kittens usually know when it’s too hot. Let them back in when they’re ready for a snuggle in the cool indoors.
  • Watch for overheating: Excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased respiratory rate, drooling, and raised heart rate are all early signs of heat stroke.

When you’re not sure what’s up with your pet, connect with your animal’s care team. Make a vet visit to ensure all’s well. Follow the above tips for a healthy, happy, safe heatwave!
