Benefits of Donating Stock or IRA before Year’s End

If you’re 70½ years and older, you have an opportunity to donate funds from your individual retirement account (IRA) directly to CAT without incurring income tax on the IRA funds withdrawn. But those who are eligible must act quickly - before December 31, 2009.

The IRA Charitable Transfer allows those who are 70½ years and older to direct up to $100,000 of their IRA to charity without those funds being counted as part of their income. So, while there is no charitable deduction for the funds transferred to the charity (because they’re not counted as part of your income), neither will the withdrawal raise the rate at which the rest of your income is taxed.

There is a hitch: according to the wording of the Pension Protection Act, it’s not enough that the transfer occurs during the year a person turns 70½. To qualify, the transfer must occur on, or after, the date you actually are 70½.  And, to take advantage of this opportunity, funds must be transferred directly to the charity without the donor taking possession of them at any time. Other restrictions apply. If you are interested in this opportunity to support CAT’s mission, please contact your tax advisor.

Options Abound for Donating Stock

If you are holding an investment because you believe it still has upside potential and do not want to sell it, consider donating the security to CAT and then re-purchasing it. By doing so you avoid paying capital gains tax on profits to-date and get a tax credit for the donation. You will also have “stepped up” the adjusted cost base of your investment, reducing capital gains and associated tax when you sell the investment.
If you own securities that have depreciated since purchase, consider triggering a capital loss by selling one or more “underperformers” and donating the cash proceeds to charity. With this strategy, you get a tax credit for the donation and you also generate a capital loss. This, in turn, can be used to offset other capital gains in the current year or in the past three years, or may be carried forward indefinitely.

In short, some advantages of donating stock are:

  • Receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction for the full value of your gift
  • Pay no capital gains tax (on assets held for more than a year)
  • Reduce adjusted gross “taxable” income

Please contact your tax advisor for specific details about donating stock to CAT.

Support CAT with a Bequest, Trust, or Annunity

Share your love of cats

Planned gifts often offer financial and tax benefits to the donor and are among the most effective ways to ensure that CAT can continue to save the lives of our community’s homeless and injured cats and kittens each year.

Review the following seven ways to reduce your taxes by making a gift to Cat Adoption Team, and then talk to your tax adviser about financial and estate planning options that will ensure your family’s goals are being met.

The most common types of planned gifts are:

1.  Bequests: Through your Will or Living Trust, you can donate to CAT a fixed amount or a percentage of your estate. Recommended language to use in your will: “I give, devise, and bequeath the sum of $_____ to the Cat Adoption Team, a charitable organization located in Sherwood, Oregon (EIN#20-0773189).”

In addition, through our “Loving Legacy” Program, CAT offers the security of a safe place and the knowledge that your cat will be cared for in a loving environment while awaiting adoption into a carefully selected, caring lifetime home, should your cat outlive you.

2.  The Pension Protection Act of 2006: If you are 70-and-one-half years or older, you can make an outright gift to CAT by transferring funds directly from your individual retirement account (IRA) without paying federal income taxes on the distribution. The gift must be made by the end of the year and will count towards your minimum required distribution. Please consult your tax adviser for current donation limits.

3.  Charitable Gift Annuities: A Cat Adoption Team charitable gift annuity will provide an immediate or deferred fixed-income stream for one or two people. This is an excellent way to increase retirement income or help support aging parents. Payout rates are based on age, and a portion of your payment will be tax-free. You will also receive a charitable income tax deduction in the year of the gift.

4.  Appreciated Assets: Donate stocks, bonds, or real estate to fund a planned gift and avoid substantial capital gains taxes on these assets. If you donate appreciated securities that you have owned for more than one year, you get a deduction for the full market value of the securities, even when it is greater than the amount you paid. You don’t have to declare the difference or the profit as income, a double benefit.

5.  Paid-Up Life Insurance Policies:  When your family responsibilities decrease and your policies are no longer critical to your family’s well-being, use them to support CAT’s work.

6.  Retirement Plans:  Tax-deferred IRA and 401K plans may be extremely vulnerable to high income and estate taxes. Naming the Cat Adoption Team as a beneficiary will reduce these taxes and allow you to leave other assets to heirs.

7.  Trusts: A charitable lead trust will generate funding for CAT until the time comes to transfer the remainder of the fund to your heirs. In the meantime, taxes can be minimized. A charitable remainder trust will provide lifetime income to you or your heirs, along with some tax benefits. When the income payout period ends, the remainder of the trust flows to the Cat Adoption Team.

Please consult with your independent financial, tax, or legal adviser for specific help with your particular situation, as CAT does not provide financial, tax, or legal advice.

For more information about these types of gifts or other giving opportunities, please contact Kim Christiansen at (503) 925 8903, ext 257, or (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), or speak directly with your tax adviser.

Donate Your Vehicle

Before your cat decides to drive your clunker, donate it to CAT.

Cars for CAT is an easy way to find a new home for your unwanted car, boat, rv, motorcycle, van, etc. CAT works with Speed’s Supertow to get you the maximum donation amount. The money raised when Speed’s auctions your unwanted vehicle will help CAT care for hundreds of unwanted and homeless cats.

Make a difference with your car donation to CAT.

Remember, responsible cat owners don’t let their cats drive.

CAT accepts donations of cars, trucks, RVs, boats, motorbikes, ATVs, and other vehicles.

To donate your vehicle:

  • Call Speed’s Super Tow at (503) 234-5555 to submit your vehicle information. Please mention you are donating your vehicle to the Cat Adoption Team.
  • Speed’s Super Tow will arrange for the vehicle drop off/pick up (depending on your location), handle all the vehicle donation paperwork with the DMV and state, and arrange for the sale of the donated vehicle at auction.
  • Net proceeds go to CAT on your behalf.
  • CAT will provide you with a tax receipt for your donation.

Tax information on your vehicle donation:

Donations of a car, truck, boat, or any type of vehicle to CAT are tax deductible for all itemizing taxpayers.

When you itemize tax deductions on IRS Schedule A of your 1040 form, you may deduct the selling price up to $500 using only the thank you letter we provide you.

If you donate a car that sells for $500 or more, you may deduct the price for which your car is sold. For tax purposes, you will need IRS form 1098-C Contributions of a Motor Vehicle. CAT will provide this to you along with a thank you letter.
This information is provided as a general understanding of the tax rule but should not be taken as complete tax advice on this topic. Please check www.irs.gov or your tax adviser for further information.
