Kiya

Kiya, a cat with attitude, was as sweet as she was beautiful.

Sweet, if you understood her quirky nature and propensity to swat at the hand that was petting her.

She became the favorite of a volunteer at one of CAT’s offsite adoption centers.

Her love story began with a failed adoption.

Kiya – passed over because of Cattitude

Kiya is a beautiful, short-haired gray tabby with a rather plumpish figure. She had no physical ailment or any obvious feature to indicate she would be extra hard to adopt. She came to the Tanasbourne PetSmart adoption center in December 2009, and though looked at by potential adopters several times, she was always passed over.

She was very nice to look at but would also give you a good swat when she felt like it and didn’t like other cats or other animals. This girl would swipe at the caregivers and just generally give “cattitude” to most people. Despite all that, you could see her wonderful cat spirit and she didn’t mind a good petting and a scratch around her ears and chin.

In February 2010, she was finally adopted but soon returned because the family was moving.

I took her back to the PetSmart adoption center. Months went by. My heart was sad for Kiya; if only she got along with other kitties or at least was not swatty with potential adopters. One summer day, a lady visited her, and Kiya did her normal, pet me, pet me….swat. The lady took her hand back and said she didn’t mind because she liked a quirky cat. She left and time went on. I received a call a few days later from a potential adopter asking to meet with me to adopt Kiya.  On September 28, that very same lady was back with her fiancée. There could be no better home for Kiya—to have people who not only respected “cattitude” but expected it and didn’t mind it at all.

Two weeks later I received an email:

“Recently I feel quite lucky because Kiya has been turning into a lap cat and cuddled me to sleep last night when I was having some insomnia. Even as I’m writing this email she’s laying beside me on the couch letting out blissful little snores. I say this in full confidence when I tell you that Kiya has found her forever home and she has quickly become a member of our chubby little family.

“Thank you to you and your team of dedicated cat lovers for taking care of this wonderful feline and all her adopted brothers and sisters who have found or have yet to find their forever homes.”

My favorite adoption of 2010.
